Franklin Barbecue 900 E 11th St, Austin Barbecue • $$

“Just completed a tour of the Central Texas Barbecue Scene. Visited Snow's BBQ-Lexington, Louie Mueller-Taylor, Kreus Market, Smitty's and Black's-Lockhart, The Salt Lick- Driftwood and Franklin's in Austin. It was great seeing the venues and the family history at these historic sites. I visited Franklin's in the past and felt it was the best brisket I had ever eaten in my life. I am a skeptic when it comes to famous barbecue joints. I must say that Franklin's BBQ was far superior to all of the restaurants I visited with no one even a close second. Aaron's attention to detail from the service, choice of briskets, the cook, the wrap, the holding and even the slicing of the final product is evident in every aspect of his trade. I was lucky enough to run into him at the restaurant and he happily talked BBQ with me. Franklin's may not have the long history of muti-generational BBQ in Central Texas, but he has figured it all out at a level that I have yet to see equaled by the best venues in the country. This is a bucket list restaurant for those who really enjoy BBQ. It is well worth the wait in line”

Ling Kitchen 8423 Research Blvd, Austin Chinese • $$$$

“We chose Ling Kitchen to celebrate a birthday. It was a dining experience that we will not forget. The staff were easy to communicate with and facilitate a food allergy, prior to arrival. Once you arrive, they will let you into a gated parking lot in the back. You will be greeted by the staff and shown to the front of the building where you will be received with champagne and tea. The dining room is one large family table directly in the kitchen.

The hosts will guide you through an exquisite 9 course tasting menu. The first 5 courses had a heavy seafood focus. Of these courses, the highlights were the seafood spread on top of a fried taro and the dumplings which had a delicious chicken filing accompanied by seafood. Moving on to the meat courses. The got better and better. The Peking Duck 2 ways that you turned into a bao slider was very good. The beef was cooked to perfection. It had a slightly sweet sauce, with a Thai basil pesto, and jellied fish and fried potato for texture. The main dishes concluded with our favorite of the night. It was a pork belly recipe that had been passed down through the family. The sauce was savory, salty, and sweet. The dish was accompanied by fried garlic and onions and a delicious black garlic leaf. The gold sheet on top was an added touch of elegance. The 5 small desserts that finished the meal were good, but nothing we would seek out again. This truly is one of the best dining experiences in Austin.”

“This was my first time ordering. The coffee machine was fast and accurate. You can order Hot or Cold, choose any kind of milk, add shots, add 2 types of Sugar and other flavors. Tip: After you complete your order you get a number, if you forget it swipe your card it will remember who you are. One of the other good features is, it will hold your coffee until you claim it. So if you have to step away, come back type in your number and Waalaa!! Your coffees waiting. I ordered a Carmel Macchiato Latte and boy😳 they did not on the EXPRESSO😣...Very 💪 Strong. But the experience was fun so..ENJOY😊”

“For our 101st 'cue stop in Texas, we stopped by this food truck on a Saturday morning. It was not at all busy, in sharp contrast to several of the other outlets in the court. We laid out $43.40 to purchase 2 biscuits with brisket and smoked strawberry jam. We added hash browns to each order ( 2 wedges per order). Although the biscuit was quite dry, the brisket was well prepared, and the smoked strawberry jam a real treat. But no plastic utensils were supplied, so we ended up scooping the jam up with our fingers. Bring your own utensils with you if you choose to visit! We're glad we came, but the price point struck us as very, very high for what we received-- too high for our wallets to absorb a second time.”

We’ve been frequenting similar spots throughout our decade of drinking in the city, but this place immediately felt like home. The drinks are a lot of fun, and the staff is incredibly welcoming. Zack, the manager, is the man! The ambiance is fantastic—super Texas, super Austin—with wild, eclectic decor that has its own unique vibe. There’s a hint of something a little edgy, maybe even a touch of dark humor in the design, but it all adds to the charm. The outdoor trailers with misters are a great touch, and the crowd always seems to be having a blast. It’s like hanging out in your backyard with your buddies, but with a cool, late-night twist. Uroko

Uroko 1023 Springdale Road Bldg 1 Suite C, Austin Sushi • $$

“A wonderful success.
Every time we go, what happens is this:
We make our initial order. Halfway through eating it, we know we will want more, so we make a secondary order. Halfway through that one, we again realize we want just a last bit more of this or that (or anything at all, just MORE!) and so we put in our *third* order. That's how tasty (Word to the wise: don't sleep on the potato croquette, $2.75. Each diner needs their own, and I need two.).

One does grow tired of this surfeit of overly hip brick and mortars, every place trying to outdo the last in atmospheric proximity to a southern California hotspot. Chilly waiters, navel-gazing menus and stratospheric prices.

In contrast, Uroko is a simple walk up, but the food is as good as any of those places, and the atmosphere is nice enough for a casual date - without resorting to a dusty-dine at one of Austin's fecund food trailer parks. It is super fresh, super delicious, super affordable and accessible Japanese food. It's one of my top favorite places in town.

Vegetarian options: Potato croquettes, miso soup, chili garlic edamame, tofu salad, seaweed salad, cucumber salad, Veg Harumaki, avocado hand roll, pickle hand roll, flower & veg hand roll”

“I recently had the pleasure of dining at III Forks in Austin, and I must say it was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. The food was nothing short of amazing—each dish was meticulously crafted and bursting with flavor. Every bite was a delightful journey of taste, showcasing creativity and a deep passion for culinary excellence. What truly set III Forks apart, however, was the service. Our waiters not only exuded warmth and genuine hospitality but also possessed an extraordinarily impressive background knowledge of every item on the menu. Their detailed explanations and insightful recommendations made the dining experience even more enjoyable, as we felt truly connected to the story behind each dish. In an era where great service and exceptional cuisine are hard to come by, III Forks excels on every level. Whether you’re a local or just passing through Austin, this restaurant is a must-visit destination. The combination of delectable food and unparalleled service creates an ambiance that’s both inviting and sophisticated—a true testament to the culinary artistry of III Forks.”

“The food was good and the presentation was clean and creative. The sashimi and nigiri pieces were quite large—I ended up cutting them into bite-sized pieces with my chopsticks. “Tex-Mex restraunt with beautiful views on a tiered patio outside deck overlooking lake Travis. This is not your typical restraunt. The restrauant is on a campus of adventure. Be ready to take plenty of photos, starting in the courtyard prior to entering the bldg. The food is amazing. They have a lot of Tex-Mexican food options. Bring an appetite. We ordered a burger and fry. Also an order of chips and salsa. They serve really good deserts as well. The water came in souvenir cups. There are some alchoholic beverages that also come in a souvenier plastic glass. There is also a souvenir shop. They have several dishes to choose from. There is a full bar with a variety of drinks. There is usually a wait for a table but you dont have to wait too long and you can walk around or have a drink while you wait. There was a live band. The patio had the best sunset view. Even though it's romantic for dates, anniversaries, birthdays, retirement, any milestone or event. This is also a kid friendly restaurant. There were a lot of families. My husband of 18 years brought me here once every year to watch a sunset since 2010. If you are looking for a recommendation for a weekend getaway destination, this is it. Anniversary, girls trip, birthday trip, just because, Austin TX is beautiful and the Oasis on Lake Travis should be on everyone's bucket list. Before you go Google what time the sunset then go to The Oasis on Lake Travis a few hours earlier. This is definitely an experience to remember!! I absolutely love this place! “This place was excellent! I had a boozy salted caramel Iced coffee that was amazing. The cinnamon roll french toast was delicious with fresh fruit and an ooey gooey drizzle. The Floridian omelette was rich and full of flavor. The grits were so creamy, I requested some cheese on top but it honestly didn't need any. the Bacqueza Omelette was savory and smokey with just enough spice and creaminess from the cream cheese. Our server Isaiah was polite and provided us great service. The only issue we had was how rude and uninterested the hostess was.”

“I recently celebrated a special occasion with a party of 10 at Steiner Ranch Steakhouse. From the moment we arrived, the service was impeccable. Our waiter, William, was incredible—attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. He made sure we had everything we needed and went above and beyond to ensure our dining experience was top-notch. The food was nothing short of spectacular. Each entree was cooked to perfection; I had the Steak Diana and my husband had the Fried Elk and both of our entrees were incredibly delicious. We also had several of their appetizers and desserts, all were delicious. We were also pleasantly surprised by how quickly our meals arrived—only about 30 minutes after we ordered for a party of 10 on a Friday night! The large portions were more than enough to satisfy everyone, and I don’t think a single person at our table managed to finish their plate. Even though we couldn’t see Lake Travis due to it being late at night, the low lighting of the restaurant created a warm and intimate atmosphere. Their menus were easy to read, even in the low lighting, as they light up upon being opened. We were seated at the back of the restaurant and the floor-to-ceiling windows showcased the stunning lights of the Hill Country. We had a reservation for 7 PM and were seated right on time, which is always appreciated. Steiner Ranch Steakhouse has definitely earned its five stars, and I can’t wait to return for another amazing meal. Highly recommend!”

“Place is great! It’s consistent with the service, food and atmosphere. Every single family and friend we’ve gathered with absolutely LOVES this restaurant. We have been coming here for years and the tourists that feel it’s a “tourist trap” need to understand what type of restaurant they are walking into- local, great food, service and family owned. Knockout martini is amazing, Bob Armstrong dip is unbeatable. The burritos and beef fajitas are the best by far. Knuckle Sandwich 8504 S Congress Ave, Austin Sandwich Shop • $$

“One of the best sandwiches I’ve had in Austin but my experience has been inconsistent on taste. The second one had a lot more mortadella which threw off the balance of flavors to me compared to my first visit which was near perfect. The meats on this are very high quality from Olympia provisions. Home slice is still the traditional winner, but if you want a fun take or something different these guys understand sandwiches and it’s surely one of Austin’s best!”

Le Calamar 1600 S 1st St Suite 100, Austin Bistros

“The place is really nice and has a fancy atmosphere. The food was good overall — the chicken liver was excellent, and the Wagyu with nyoki was great. I wasn’t a fan of the fries or the chicken wings.

One downside was the long wait for the main courses. While the starters arrived fairly quickly, within 5–10 minutes of ordering, we had to wait much longer for the mains. We ordered two rounds of main dishes, and for the first round, we waited about 30 minutes or more, even though the restaurant wasn’t particularly crowded.”
